Shorewood Print of the Month

Tar Beach II by Faith Ringgold

Faith Ringgold was born in Harlem, New York in 1930. Quit making was an important tradition in the Ringgold family; her mother had learned quilt-making techniques from a great-grandmother, a former slave. In the 1980s Ringgold developed her story quilt paintings that combine the medium of painting and quilt making. Ringgold’s memories of growing up in Harlem with her family in a brownstone apartment are reflected in Tar Beach II. The setting takes place on the tar roof of the family’s apartment. The quilt combines real life and fantasy.
